200 Foot Church Stupidity

Grace Community Church is raising money to build two enormous crosses that its pastor says will mark the entrances to Houston on Interstate 45. The crosses will likely rank among the largest in the world.

Counting their bases, the crosses would reach up to 200 feet. Each would dwarf I-45’s current symbol of Texas largeness. “Big Sam” Houston, the colossal statue in Huntsville, stands 77 feet tall with its base.

The symbols of Christianity would tower over Grace’s freeway-hugging campuses: the south campus at Dixie Farm Road, and the new north campus just south of The Woodlands. Combined, they serve 12,000 members.

The Romans use to put crosses to the entries of cities they had conquered with people in different states of decomposition to remind them what happened if you messed with them!

This is such a terrible use of a church’s resources that I will not waste your time ranting against it. It should be that obvious.

  1. I wonder what the church is compensating for?

  2. When I read things like this, I start to wonder. What else could be done with that money? Something more helpful, perhaps? With the current food crisis making existing global and domestic tragedies even worse, this seems particularly wasteful. I don’t think building giant monuments like this does much to glorify God. Investing in real ministry, or helping the poor: not so exciting (a word that is probably interpreted in several different ways by people who know about this project), maybe, but surely a better use of time and money, and a better reflection of what God really cares about.

  3. Obviously a better use of their money would to make one 400 foot cross.

    Maybe with lasers.

  4. LASERS!!!

A laser light show on a 400 ft cross is the single most brilliant idea I’ve ever heard in my life.

All you need now is some Pink Floyd playing during the performance …

  5. [...] This is pretty ridiculous…a 200 foot cross to be built at the entrance of Houston, just an idea but maybe there is better ways to spend your money for the Kingdom? [...]
