Jesus Costume Gets Child Sent Home From School

October 31, 2008

Alex Woinski an eighth-grader in New Jersey was sent home from school today and told to change out of his costume: They deemed Jesus Christ inappropriate.

Superintendent James Montesano said he didn’t know about the incident but said he believes the reason for doing so was most likely not because anyone was offended by the religious nature of the costume but that it may have been disrupting classes.

Seriously? Really? The sad thing is I don’t think Jesus has become so offensive that these people cannot stand a child dressing up as him, but his representatives on Earth (and I’m sorry but especially the conservative fundies in America) have been so offensive beating people over the head with a made up morality conflated with materialism and nationalism (think Falwell and Dobson) that they can’t stand the symbol they use to hammer others over the head with. This story is sad on both sides.

Someone should tell this kid Jesus wears a blue sash... duh!

Too tired to rant today… read the whole thing HERE.

I used to teach software development at a private college, mostly adult students. I caught a student cheating one time and the religion card was played (he was a muslim and accused me of persecuting him because I was a Christian, he was a bit in your face about his religious life that was probably more due to his insecurity). Unfortunately for him, he copied the work of another muslim student. Because the religion card made the situation so sensitive, I had to think creatively to resolve the issue. I set up a second exam and told them both they would have to write it. I gave the rest of the class the day off. The innocent guy showed up on time and I put him on one side of the room, the other guy dragged himself in late. He stared at the new exam for about 20 minutes, then looked at me to declare he could not write the exam. I escorted him to the office.

The religion card just confuses things. Even if this kid was misbehaving I would be very careful in how to handle the situation.

Ten bucks says that the report just left out the little detail that the kid was probably acting like an idiot in class and pretending to turn girls water bottles into wine glasses and claiming that he could cure his little buddies of their “gayness” all while splashing water on the floor and walking on it in the middle of an exam or something.

This isn’t about Jesus or religion at all. It’s about a 14 year old boy in a Jesus costume acting like a… 14 year old boy in a Jesus costume. The news will report on it like it’s a fifth amendment case but I’ll bet a ridiculous sum of money that the kid was acting like the biggest moron in a middle school full halloween’d morons and the school sent him home before he got the crap kicked out of him and someone put up a cell phone video of Jesus getting beat up in a jr high hallway… at which point there would’ve been an even BIGGER deal made out of it than there is already.

Kudos to the school for making the right move and an even bigger kudos to them for not commenting on the story and playing into the story that the media wants to make of this.

And why is it that whenever a 14 year old kid gets in trouble on the news he or she is ALWAYS AND FOREVER WITHOUT FAIL on the freaken honour roll???

“Oh little Johnny and his 5 friends beat up an 80 year old man on the bus last week but they’re good boys really. They’re on the honour roll!!!”

    Gimme a break.

You’d do the exact same thing if you dressed up as Jesus when you were 14…

    Or you know, 32. Whatever.

Some years ago, I went to a Halloween stag-and-doe, dressed up as Jesus carrying the cross. I went all out — and this was before “The Passion” made it cool to look like Jesus just after he got shit-kicked.

Anyway, I was double-fisting my beers and slow dancing with my cross on the dance floor when I got hit by the Evangelicals (did I mention that there were a lot of Conservative Christians at this stag-and-doe?). Man, it was good times… although for a minute I thought that my fake blood was about to turn into real blood.
