George Nickelsburg Lecturing at Trinity Western University

February 17, 2009

I am very pleased to report that Dr. George Nickelsburg will be visiting and lecturing at TWU on March 18-19.  George W.E. Nickelsburg is an internationally known specialist in the field of early Judaism and the origins of Christianity. He is a graduate of Valparaiso University and earned his Th.D. from Harvard Divinity School in 1968. Nickelsburg is Professor Emeritus at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where he taught New Testament studies and early Judaism in the Department of Religious Studies for thirty-one years. Prior, he was pastor of a Lutheran Church in Akron, Ohio for three years.

Dr. Nickelsburg has written seven books (among them Jewish Literature Between the Bible and the Mishnah, Ancient Judaism and Christian Origins, and 1 Enoch: A Commentary on the Book of First Enoch), over 90 articles for scholarly books and journals, 200 entries for dictionaries and encyclopedias, and edited seven other books. He has been on the editorial board of the journal Dead Sea Discoveries since its inception in 1994. Also, he has served on the editorial board of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly for eight years and was an editor of The Dictionary of Judaism in the Biblical Period and the Encyclopedia of Religious and Philosophical Writings in Late Antiquity.

If you are in the area and are interested in biblical studies you can attend a free public lecture on:

Wednesday, March 18, 2009
Evening public lecture
Speaker: Dr. George W.E. Nickelsburg
Topic: “Were the Jews Expecting a Messiah?”
Date and Time: Wednesday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m.
Venue: Northwest Auditorium

If there are any undergrad students interested in attending the lectures, and are traveling a distance for the purpose of hearing Nickelsburg, but also with the intention of checking out the MABIB program, TWU may be able to accommodate you on campus provided that there are rooms still available. I believe you would also be able to attend the Thursday lecture:

Thursday, March 19, 2009
MABIB Graduate Student lunch with Dr. Nickelsburg
2:30 – 5:15 p.m.   All MABIB students invited to Dr. Flint’s Advanced Old
Testament Seminar class. Dr. Nickelsburg will be discussing his upcoming
commentary on the Parables of Enoch.

I’m quite excited about this as 1 Enoch is one of the areas I am considering for my MA thesis.  If you are going to attend make sure you find me and introduce yourself.

If you want to do 1 Enoch start learning Ethiopic and Coptic. And also read Loren Stuckenbruck’s recent commentary.

    Learn languages? Read commentaries?

    No way!

    Sola fide, baby, sola fide.

I’ve read Nickelsburg’s Enoch commentary, and his “Jewish Literature between the Bible and the Mishnah”. Both are excellent.

Any clue if these lectures will find their way to a podcast?
