Benny Hinn Does Not Have ‘the Power’…

February 20, 2010

In case you have not seen this story–though it has been widely reported–Benny Hinn’s wife recently filed for divorce. (HT: Chris). To be honest I don’t mind seeing things go a little sideways in Benny’s life. I mean, I feel bad for his kids, they don’t deserve to suffer the sins of the father, and I’m sure they will have some issues to work through… but Benny? Yeah, I really don’t mind seeing this for one simple reason: maybe some sheeple will wise up.

You see, Benny is part of that stain on humanity called TBN that is constantly trying to bilk and swindle people out of their money. Benny even went so low during the recession to claim that if you didn’t have enough money to pay your mortgage to take what little money you had left and seed it into his ministry for “supernatural debt-cancellation.”

Important aspects of Benny’s–and others like him–claims is one) there is something God is holding back from you that you can only get through him, two) you must take a step of faith by giving money to access what God is holding back, and three) once you take this step of faith God will give you what he is holding back and you will have complete and total victory. Victory in your finances, in your life, in your business, in your marriage. Jesus came to give life and life more abundantly.

Basically God is a force (not a person) and Jesus is magic. Do the correct ritual–“seed” money–and say the right incantation (Yell: In Jesus-us’ name-uh) and you will have more money than you know what to do with and everything will go awesome in your life. All of the time. Always.

The final ingredient in the scam may be the most important: playing off of people’s lusts and desires. Benny will claim all sorts of healings and will play off of the emotions and desires of those who desperately need healing. I’ve personally seen this one with my own sister and it is heartbreaking to watch and go through. Painful. Or they will show their houses and riches, and hold their own position up as the proof of what they are claiming.

This is very important, don’t miss it: they are the final proof of what they are claiming. The proof is in the pudding so to speak. Conversely, if things are going poorly then the power of God is not on your life. It is very much cause-and-effect theology. Reminds me of the immediate retribution, covenantal theology of the Zadokites.

For an example listen to Benny lay it out himself:

At this point I want to ask any of you that are followers of this sort of “theology” to just stop and use your brains for a second. Among the TBN rip-off artists’ there has been “a spirit of divorce” to use their own misguided and passing-of-the-buck language. I’m a class one asshole at home and my spouse files for divorce but let’s blame things on the “spirit of divorce” or the devil. It works, and it’s easy because you never have to do any of the really hard work of discipleship and deal with any of the issues in your own heart. I didn’t use unkind words. I didn’t act unforgiving. In fact I was the best most loving husband/wife but that spirit of divorce…

Paul and Jan Crouch: divorced
Bynum and Weekes: divorced
Paula and Randy White: divorced
Benny Hinn and Suzanne Hinn: divorced

I’m sure there are more if I had the desire to look, but I can only take TBN and their ilk in very small doses. Too much exposure can lead to a loss of brain cells and IQ. You have to be careful.

Questions: Where is the complete and total victory in Benny’s life? Shouldn’t Benny’s radical anointing and holiness prevent something like this from happening? And if, according to Benny’s theology, bad things happening in your life is the proof of the absence of the power of God then why the hell is he still ministering? Shouldn’t there be a step back for awhile?

How can he have the anointing (by his theology) and hold “miracle” and “fire” conferences when the proof of his life is that he does not have the power of God?

Followers of TBN and Benny: the emperor has no clothes! The wizard Benny who you hope will predict the future, make you rich, or heal your illnesses has no power. Benny has no special connection to God, and you will not get “a bountiful harvest’ by giving money to Benny. Well, sorry, you will get something: you’ll get screwed!

Wake up world: God is not a force, Jesus is not magic, and Benny the wizard has no power… especially not the power of God.

Whist divorce is always a sad thing, I note that his PR people have already started to spin this:

“Pastor Benny Hinn and his immediate family were shocked and saddened to learn of this news without any previous notice. Although Pastor Hinn has faithfully endeavored to bring healing to their relationship, those efforts failed and were met with the petition for divorce that was filed without notice.”

It’ll all be down to the ‘Spirit of Jezebel’.

Wow – he has nooooo shame at all!

I have a friend who thinks everyone is good because he belongs to the group of spiritual people I know – who are very unselfish, and he sees the good in everyone. But he is so willing to believe in his faith of mankind, that he doesn’t entertain the thought that someone claiming to be a servant of God could – actually be fleecing people! I feel bad for his believing in this – this – bad apple, let’s just say…I mentioned Hinn one time, and my friend went off on some happy chatter about him ….so, I didn’t and probably can’t discourage him from listening to him.

They manage to throw in enough bible quotes, metaphors – and gobbledegook – that they fool the simple, honest people. And these guys don’t stop coming, do they! No shortage of them – and I can’t believe how they push the envelope! How do they talk to one another back of the stage?!! Are they laughing? Greedy – blame it on the wife’s failure to reach an agreement – yeah, I bet!

I think “Jezebel spirit” is probably the preferred nomenclature, too.
Is it Paul Crouch or Jr or both who is divorced? This isn’t a case where names are confused is it? For instance, R. C. Sproul is still active but R. C. Sproul Jr (last I read) was defrocked for committing some kind of fraud with a denominational EIN number. it’s tricky to keep track of some of these people with names differing only on the basis of a middle initial or a Jr at the end.

I too, would love to listen in on the “locker room” talk at a Benny Hinn show. I’ll bet backstage is akin to a 1987 Motley Crue show at The Troubador.

” I’ll bet backstage is akin to a 1987 Motley Crue show at The Troubador.”

      Or Glengarry Glen Ross.

“That watch costs more than you car. I made $970,000 last year. How much you make? You see pal, that’s who I am, and you’re nothing. Nice guy? I don’t give a shit. Good father? Fuck you! Go home and play with your kids. You wanna work here – close! You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can’t take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit? You don’t like it, leave. “

I have to wonder if this is like that episode of “My Name is Earl,” with the kid who was a “faith healer.” By the end of the episode, you find out that Earl’s “healing” consisted of the kid’s Dad slipping Earl $20 to pretend to be injured so he could get healed.

The kid’s mother left his father after she found out, too…

GOOD. Let him lose millions of dollars. He’s a wolf in sheepskin clothing.

I think it’s likely that God may have been able to successfully use Benny for his glory years ago. Maybe he actually cared about the hurting back then. But for a long time now it seems like he’s mainly concerned for himself. Like so many others all the fame and money went to his head and corrupted him. It happens so often. It happens even with men who’ve experienced even far less fame and wealth.

Someone above brought up RC Sproul Jr. Now there’s an even sadder case (IMHO) than Benny Hinn. At least with Benny we can say, “Well no wonder. The guy’s become an egomaniac fathead, not to mention all his nutty theology.” But what about RC Sproul Jr? Sproul’s theology isn’t cooky. He learned most of what he knows from one of the sharpest theological minds in the world today, RC Sproul Sr. And unlike Benny Hinn, RC Sproul Jr isn’t a millionaire and doesn’t globetrot around in a personal jet. So in some ways it seems like Sproul Jr is even more depraved, or at least easily corrupted, than Benny Hinn. Hinn sold out for millions. Sproul sold out for a lot less.

And that, kiddies, is the difference between Louisiana and Illinois Politics…

Richard, you sound like some one who knew Sproul personally?

Wait a minute…I bet you did. And I also bet you’re that Kershaw guy, the man that lived in a house paid for by Saint Peter Presbyterian Church, and was evicted by court order.

You’re probably the same Kershaw who rumor had it was having a homosexual encounter with one of the parishioners at Saint Peter Presbyterian parish -a boy with the last name of Clement, and inviting him up to your bedroom.

When word got out to Jay Barfield and Laurence Windham, Kershaw blackmailed the session and used his contact Randy Talbot to tarnish the reputation of The Highland Study Center and Ligionier Ministries.

I wonder if Ted Cunningham and Gary Smalley know about your sadomasochism?

Guys do you really think bitching about people especially good men of god is a good idea, yeah we all screw up sometimes and so did Benny, he admitted it and is forgiven and that’s all that matters so whats the big deal. We have one life to live and in this life we are here to bring heaven onto earth, do you really think bitching about people is going to increase God’s kingdom… NO and if you think it does you have serious issues and need to start reading your bible. If you have a problem with Benny contact him your self and don’t go gossiping around the internet because your only reducing the amount of healings and people coming into the kingdom of God which is bad. I know many people who have come to christ through Benny and people like you are only reducing that so stop and actually go and enhance the kingdom of God by spreading the good news because thats what Benny is trying to do really, it’s just he made a mistake big deal he’s human just like us guys 🙂
