Sad News: The Death of Hanan Eshel

The eminent Dead Sea Scholar, Professor Hanan Eshel passed away in Jerusalem and will be buried this afternoon.

May his memory be for a blessing.  Obits will be posted when they begin to appear.  In the meanwhile, Joseph Lauer writes

Prof. Aren Maeir posted the sad tidings at the The Tell es-Safi/Gath Excavations Official (and Unofficial) Weblog and also noted that ”The funeral is today (Thursday, April 8th, 2010) at 4 pm in the cemetery at Ma’aleh Hahamisha, just outside of Jerusalem.” See further for Dr. Maeir’s note at

The Israeli press has begun to report the very sad news.  Arutz Sheva has an obituary here.   A short list of his many publications can be seen here.


I had the opportunity to spend some time with the Eshels last fall, including the chance to bless them with some food on Shabbat and listen to them talk for a few hours on all things Scrolls related, or wherever else our conversation led. I wish that I could have had the opportunity to spend many more Sabbaths with them and learn from their wisdom and experience. I spent a few hours with Hanan and I left thinking, “Man, I wish I had the chance to be this guy’s friend.” His personality struck me so.

A professor whom I respect a great deal recently had the chance to spend a few weeks in Israel with the Eshels. I imagine her heart and soul are very heavy this morning. My thoughts are with her…
