What Does Terrible Theological Speculation Look Like?

July 19, 2011

It looks like this:

In the coming days I am going to have more to say about methodology and philosophical speculation, but the  assertions in the above video, as if they explain the complex social, economic, and political realities in Japan are just staggeringly simplistic and insane.

So Japan’s prosperity is Satanic, Japan is Satanic, because the Emperor of Japan screws the Whore of Babylon under the name Amaterasu?

That’s right up there with Rebuking The Demon of Burned Out Lightbulbs. Can anybody even cross the street without a DEMON being involved?

So many things wrong here but let’s start with the facts:
Traditionally the Emperor of Japan is understood as being a descendant of Amaterasu (and therefore divine), the Sun Goddess, from which he is understood to have divine right to rule and not as one who sleeps with her. (Although for most Japanese today this is not believed, especially after the banning of State Shinto after WW2 and the public renouncement of his ‘divinity’).
I’m not even going to go into the poor theology and lack of ethics!
Just sicking and a awful witness to Christ!

I love the circa-1989 laptop at 0:14. Stay classy, San Diego.

Is it just me, or does Peter Wagner look like the devil incarnate?

Actually, more like the love child of Satan and Colonel Sanders.

So every member of our federal government is having sex with the Sun Goddess? (“I did not have sex with that Sun Goddess!”) – I wonder if having sex with the Sun Goddess is prime? – or sub-prime? – what’s the long-term yield with this hottie? – if this babe’s really nuclear-fusion-hot in the sack, then is there a penalty for early withdrawal?

Batshit insane Christianity – is there any other kind? Geez, this stuff is creepy. Dark Ages nonsense smack-dab in the 21st century.

As one of the YouTube commenters asks:

Who the f*ck sits in the audience and listens to this crap?

This is the problem with American Christianity, Scott. It isn’t merely that these guys exist; it’s that millions of people listen to them and hang on their every word. This is how they’ve managed to commandeer the political process over the past thirty years and decimate our educational system.

And, of course, the liberals (including the Sojourners and Emergent crowds, so don’t even bother going there) say next to nothing, because it’s unseemly to criticize a “brother [or sister] in Christ”.

It would be nice if RightWingWatch.org would show the whole video instead of just post an edited-to-their-liking excerpt on YouTube. There are noticeable cuts/jumps in what Wagner is saying at 0.32 and 0:56, and while the deleted parts may not do much to redeem or better explain Wagner – they may simply be distracting pauses or him wandering off on non-related topics – the fact that we see only the parts that RWW.org wants us to see is not fair to Wagner or to us.

RWW did the same thing with that Lou Engle IHOP video when they didn’t show the entirety of his reasons for saying what he did.

And while Wagner may be nutso cuckoo (his partner, Apostle Chuck Pierce, and his church are just a few miles up the road from us in Denton, TX, so I can hear this kind of stuff in person anytime I want to), it’s not safe or wise to make a judgment or blanket statement about a person based on remarks that could very well have been taken and used out of context.

While it’s quite likely that there’s probably no way to view or take or understand what Wagner says any differently than what we see and hear here, there is still a slight chance that things will look and sound different if they’re not slickly cut-and-pasted together but presented in their entirety.

Which is one reason I pay little attention to RWW.org’s videos. I could have Paul telling people to go castrate themselves if I cut and pasted his letters any which way I wanted to. (Wait. He did say that!)
