El Shaddai: The Rise of Metatron

July 20, 2011

Last night I downloaded a playable demo for my PS3 El Shaddai: The Rise of Metatron:

According ot the game makers: “El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is a potentially special title because it is based on the Book of Enoch, one of the documents that are part of the Dead Sea scrolls, a cache of documents that offer an alternative take on the history of early Christianity and on the person of Jesus himself.”(Just for the record the DSS do not offer an alternative take on the ‘history’ of early Christianity and Jesus himself).

It looks to me that while some characters may have been taken from the Hebrew Bible and 1 Enoch the story line might be more influenced by 3 Enoch. Which is too bad because a Fall of the Watchers game in which Enoch assists the heavenly archangels in defeating the giants and rounding up the fallen angels to throw them in a pit in the wilderness would make for an epic video game. Also the cosmological backdrop of the second half of the Book of the Watchers would make for amazing scenery in which to set the story.

Also, in this game, apparently the Nephilim are giant penises:

I would say they got that one wrong, but maybe the game directors have been reading their Animal Apocalypse?!?

Anyways, it’s hard to judge a game adequately off of one level, though it seemed to be a bit of a button masher developing a story that randomly takes characters from a variety of different ancient Hebrew stories to create a story line, e.g., “Goldilocks was wearing a red-hood when she entered her mother’s ginger-bread house…”

Remnants of Giants has a post on the game here, as well as PaleoJudaica herehere and here.

Worst idea for a videogame. Ever. Well, right after that video game based on heaven.

I’m not sure mythic characters with expansive backdrops is the worst idea for a game ever, but for me, games are always about the play. Are you trying to sell me something fun, entertaining, and interactive, or just a bad game dressed up with some bells and whistles.

I still like the early reports of the game where they talked about “The Rise of Megatron.” A Book of Enoch / Transformers mash-up would be … interesting.

Eh, Afterlife had its moments. It certainly wasn’t the worst game ever made.

Looks like most games I’ve seen – but then I’m not a gamer.

Why not? Japanese game makers have been playing fast and loose with every other mythology in the world. Other game makers may as well follow suit, and I see no reason for Hebrew mythology to be exempt. Woo is woo. Best of all, Biblical fiction is copyright-free. Maybe the designers are hoping for an extra publicity boost when preachers begin to complain about this. Nephilim as shmoos, ball and stick landscapes- they really stayed up all night working on those graphics.

I haven’t looked at any DSS material in a long time, but I seem to recall an idea put forth that at least one scroll suggested that followers of John the Baptist disliked Jesus. There are plenty of people out there who believe the DSS contradict the gospels. I almost don’t care if that notion is based on good scholarship or not, because it pleases me to see people begin to doubt.

“It’s as if Lady Gaga made a video game.”

0_o Did they take that as a compliment?
