Another Failed Rapture On The Horizon

September 7, 2011

Harold Camping struck out on May 21. This guy will strike out at the end of September (it’s about comet Elenin). And Camping will strike out again on October 21st.

Our Last Month on Earth. How ARE You?

Just another poorly inculcated and badly socialized person given the poorest of categories by which to understand natural phenomena and human events.

For what it’s worth: I was socialized into a form of Christianity not far from this, so I understand where it’s coming from. It’s a weird place to indwell cognitively. The end is always nigh. There is always some form of corporate evil: the spirit world, the government, the Illuminati. And there is always evil conspiracies.

At the same time, those like myself who were socialized into this form of understanding large mysterious human or spiritual entities, are also taught not to question a single person with authority. So a pastor can get on stage, or a blogger write an article, or a dilettante make a video, and because that person somehow magically knows what’s really going on, he or she can spout most any inanity and it is accepted mostly whole-cloth. It’s a weird dichotomy by which to understand ‘reality’: big evil mysterious entities like the government trying to get us in the end-times, but sage, wise authoritative ‘prophets’ who know what is really going on (even though they have absolutely no access to much real information).

Add in a healthy dose of ignorance and confirmation bias, and there are no natural events that cannot be construed into some sort of conspiracy or the end of days.

Basically: the sky is falling all of the time!

But it’s not. Gross conjecture and speculation that use bad categories and confirmation bias to ‘predict’ the outcomes of natural phenomena have a fairly poor track record in the history of humankind. The sky may fall some day, but probably not at the end of the month.

“The rational side of me is thinking, ‘Don’t fool yourselves. Don’t fool yourself, because you don’t know that you know that you know that this stuff is going to happen.’ And then the faith side of me—the side of me that’s actually logically looking at all the facts—is going, ‘It’s gonna happen.’

The “faith side” is the one looking “logically” at the facts, not the “rational side.” Hmmmm.

The “faith side” is the one looking “logically” at the facts…

That the same “faith side” that pays $70 an ounce for Golden Oil made with Jesus DNA, Diamond Oil made with Angel Technology, and silver ingots with the Ten Commandments engraved?

Forget speaking in tongues, even one language is apparently too much for some people to manage.

I love that Zionism makes an appearance.
