“Dr.” David Tee

July 5, 2012

The last few weeks we have been visited by someone who is claiming to be a “Dr.”, David Tee. It was pretty obvious from his poor argumentation that he has had very little to no training in any sort of academic process, but he kept claiming that he has, and that his degrees are ‘personal’ information (as if anyone who has gone to University in NA keeps that sort of information as “personal”).

Anyways, I decided to do some poking around, who knew, maybe he had acquired some sort of training in a fundamentalist, conservative school? It’s not like Liberty University is turning out the brightest biblical scholars in the world. It could be possible… but, no, it seems my original suspicion might be closer to the truth.

I googled “Dr.” David Tee, and mostly found comments on other people’s blogs. He has some sort of association with the Dakotas Christian Believers Arena.

And he’s self-published… which is where this gets interesting, and a little sad/humorous.

“Dr. Tee has two books he has written

  1. What I Have Learned as a Korean Public School Teacher
  2. Archaeology and the Unwary Believer

While I could go on ad nauseum about the irony of “Dr.” Tee teaching other people English (seriously “Dr.”, you need a refresher on proper comma usage, co-ordinating conjunctions, and independent clauses. Like, real bad.), I’ll let the back cover of his book on teaching demonstrate:

Wow, that’s a beautiful first sentence… for a sixth grader!

I will profess to being ignorant of the higher education of Korea, but does it seem more probable that “Dr.” Tee was attending a reputable school and in 10 years, while teaching, earned University degrees in theology, church history, and archaeology? Or is it far more likely that he did a couple of online courses and styles himself a “Dr.” now?

“Dr.” Tee also really likes Comic Sans font: I kid you not, his ‘academic’ tome on archaeology is entirely printed in comic sans.

If any actual professors or Doctors are looking for classroom examples of circular fideistic logic, strawmen, false dichotomies, and logical fallacies then this is the book for you: it’s packed! Apparently, that’s what you learn when you get your degrees online.

So, apparently, according to “Dr.” Tee, biblical scholars that disagree with him can’t be honest or are unbelievers. In his mentally stunted mind he simply can’t comprehend how the actual historical process works, and why scholars might come to different conclusions according to the biblical chronology and actual history: that in itself proves his lack of actual academic experience. A good scholar worth his salt does not create a strawman of those he or she disagrees with, or minimizes their position to be swept under the rug with grand sweeping generalizations and false dichotomies.

A good scholar must understand the fundamental issues of another scholar’s position, how and why they came to those conclusions, and must understand that all historical reconstructions are contextual and provisional. I have no problem with someone disagreeing with my work; however, in the academy anyways, you must actually read and try to understand someone first, then offer a counter-argument that deals with their evidence and argumentation, and finally, offer an alternative theory that uses actual data and not just presuppositional theories. Deductive ideas how things “must” work often beg the question and are circular.

I could give examples of how higher criticism actually works, or ask some questions that would require using historical academic skills: how on earth does Darius reverse the decree of Artaxerxes? But dealing with these issues or answering these questions requires actual thinking… something I’m becoming more convinced that “Dr.” Tee is unable to do. Hiding under the rigid deductive shield of fundamentalist indoctrination and false titles doesn’t really help with ‘thinking’.

interesting stuff Scott. this clown has been attempting comments ad nauseum on the blog for a good while. i’m gonna reblog this one.

Reblogged this on Zwinglius Redivivus and commented:
As I told Scott, this guy, this dilettante, really is a piece of self-righteous work.

you are one to talk. your forum carries your self-righteous and condemning attitude throughout its pages. when did God say it was okay to say people were totally depraved? or that it was okay to say you know why the kids got guns and then blame the parents even though you have no idea how the guns got into the kids hands.

instead of name-calling and judging others you should be repenting and getting right with God. you have promoted yourself to some authority you are not entitled to wield. you create stumbling blocks to Christ and you shoul dbe ashamed o fyourself not prideful and walking around like a male peacock with its feathers on display.

I don’t know. The Bible seems pretty full of “people saying people are totally depraved” to me. 🙂

How does our host obtain this “authority” anyway? This is a private BLOG and he uses it to discuss things which interest him.

I would also note that our host doesn’t create these “stumbling blocks” your own religion and its 600 or whatever sects, creeds, and mutually suspicious cults scatters such stumbling blocks throughout the path of anyone who is able to think a little bit.

I always get a chuckle when someone minimizes other scholars positions by sweeping them under the rug with grand sweeping generalizations, while complaining the other guy is “minimizes their position to be swept under the rug with grand sweeping generalizations.”

I always get a chuckle when someone makes a comment at the end of a two week conversation who has no idea what they are talking about.

Do you really expect me to go through line-by-line of his poorly written and even worse thought through Book? Every time Not-a-Dr Tee writes a comment it is ample evidence of what I said above.

When you can’t refute the truth you attack the person. It is the next play in the unbeliever’s handbook. Christians are to do things God’s way not the secular world’s ‘academic’ way, and there is a big difference between the two.

    • July 5, 2012 8:05 pm

You have hardly presented “truth” when you continue to lie and misrepresent yourself. If an ad hominem is the next play in the unbeliever’s handbook (really?), then apparently you only have one play: lie. You have yet to answer any straight forward questions and continue to try and move the goalposts.

There is a big difference: one relies on speculation and indoctrination, the other probes its beliefs and changes its views based on evidence (and it actually works!).

Also, since when is working while studying a crime? One has to pay for their education some how. At least I didn’t take out a loan and fail to pay it back.

    • July 5, 2012 8:02 pm

I didn’t say it was a crime: I worked the entire time I was in school. I’m not saying you didn’t work, or that work is bad, I’m saying you’re misrepresenting your credentials.

      • July 5, 2012 8:23 pm

you would be wrong. you also do not know my target audience so your assumptions just prove you like to misrepresent yourself and my work

If you are only concerned with “God’s way” and not the “secular way” of academics…then why do you make sure to constantly use the “Dr.” when commenting? It seems like a way to try and impress others….surely not a “godly” impulse, right?

  7. July 5, 2012 4:44 pm

Wrong. God does not say anywhere in the Bible that I cannot use the earned title of Dr. I certainly do not use it to brag but then you and the others need something to attack so you can justify ignoring the message.

If it’s an earned title, why not give us some details? I know many M.D.s and Ph.D.s and M.D./PhD.s, and I’ve never met any who wouldn’t say where they got their degree or what they studied. In fact, it’s usually difficult to get them to stop talking about it once they get started. 😛

      • July 6, 2012 3:08 pm

Well I am not them and have a different view, which is also not a crime. If you read the screen shot you would have seen the topics I studied. There is no need to be redundant and where I studied is personal information and does not get put on the internet.

        • July 9, 2012 7:35 am

Actually, in the academic world (which you bizarrely equate with ‘secular’ when what you mean is probably ‘made of thinking people’) the educational curriculum of a MA, MSc, PhD, or Professor does indeed land on the Internet, on mysterious platforms called ‘websites of the college where they teach and/or research’, so as to provide information about the academic path of said person to confirm their credentials.
But I guess credentials are not your strong suit Dr. David Tee or -to use your full academic title- David Tee.

          • July 9, 2012 10:49 am

“or -to use your full academic title- David Tee.” That’s really it in a nutshell isn’t it. Well played.

          • July 9, 2012 3:59 pm

where do i equate the academic world with the term secular? of course there is both secular and christian education. One has to define where the focus of the teaching lies to get a better grip of where the person is coming from. I give the credit for my education to God not the institution. Credentials do nothing for a person but God does a lot so He gets the glory not a piece of paper or human institution.

My full academic title is Dr. David Tee.

            • July 10, 2012 6:44 am

Well, here’s the unedited quote where you say what I’m claiming you say: “Christians are to do things God’s way not the secular world’s ‘academic’ way”.
Of course I’m quite aware -so is anyone else, I suspect- that you will now come up with some bogus counter(non)argument to split hairs and muddy the waters, maintaining you didn’t really say that, or were actually meaning something else, or stuff like that.

Edit much, Dr. Tee? Where did you earn your degrees?

none of your business. Since God gave me the education, He gets the credit.

Hmmmm, god gave you the education…. yet you paid back your student loans (according to your previous post)…. Is your “god” a bookie? Also, you are apparently giving your “god” all the credit for you being a Dr. and in the same breath defend yourself as earning the title. So which is it, God gave you the education (a hand out), or you earned the education with hard work? Or, did he simply process your online application for a $100 fee… hmmm…. you needed a loan?

        • July 11, 2012 6:40 pm

I think you are just using semantics to criticize someone you do not like even though I have done nothing to you. You have some misinformation there, which i will not take the time to correct.

The thing is, you all attack me for nothing I have done to you. None of you have even read the books so you all have the problem not me. I earned my degrees and wrote books, two activities that are not illegal nor a misrepresentation.

Why don’t you read the books and see if I error and then offer some constructive criticism instead of the emotional reactions you are giving when I tell you the truth.

I actually feel sorry for the “Dr.” He goes around picking fights on websites and hoping to gain some attention for himself and winds up with mostly negative attention which he dismisses under the guise of unbelievers’ tactics.

He views himself as the lone voice of reason and sanity in a rotten world, unable to consider how far off course he is, or ever acknowledge the discrepancies between his personal views and everyone else’s views might originate in his own mind.

    • July 6, 2012 3:06 pm

@ liza–I think the discrepancies between your personal views and the real world is in your mind. You certainly are way off base in your ‘assessment’ and you really have no clue as to what you are talking about

Holy cow. I’m going to have to side with Tee on this one, “or -to use your full academic title- David Tee.”

You would be wrong in identifying him as a Troll, Lang. Dave is a delusional Poe who lives in South Korea. What’s a Poe you ask?

It comes from Poe’s law, an axiom suggesting that it’s difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish between parodies of religious or other fundamentalism and its genuine proponents, since they both seem equally insane.

That is actually Dave’s self-published ‘book’ up there, and of course his circular reasoning and rhetoric make it seem as if he HAS to be a troll, but no, unfortunately, he is just that delusional and insane.

  11. July 9, 2012 4:04 pm

I should say thanks for the free publicity. My sales need a shot in the arm. Please buy a copy or two and read them for yourselves instead of judging a book by its cover. The author is not important but the message is.

Remember believers are to do all things for the glory of God not ourselves so you may not like how i designed the cover but that doesn’t matter as it shows how superficial you all really are and that you place the man above the message and purpose of the work.

    • July 10, 2012 6:51 am

Publicity? You are aware that no sane person is going to take any single one of your bizarre claims seriously, are you?
Or are you planning to link this article in your resume to show how you have “successfully handled a theological debate in the very lion’s den, you lone champion of faith and sanity in a world of godless insanity”? I seriously doubt any sane theologian (or philosopher, or archeologist, or whatever) would hire you.

    • July 10, 2012 6:55 am

Besides: may I remember you that you wrote your ‘archeological treatise’ in Comic Sans? The only chance one wouldn’t be turned off by that is if it were in a Powerpoint presentation of the Higgs’ Boson discovery.*

PRD– you really have a problem if you are worried about the style of font used. that indicates that you are running from the truth and need an excuse to avoid reading what was written.

I do not recall that I am looking for employment. Besides why would I work for people whose goals and agenda are different from God’s?

Your need to personally attack means that your credibility and words are meaningless and that you have nothing to offer. Read the books and then come back with some factual rebuttals.

Your other message was lost in the calendar but I suspect I didn’t miss out on anything vital, just more personal attacks from those who feel threatened by the truth. you should note that both Jesus and God said to follow them–not science, archaeology or theologians, right?

    • July 11, 2012 8:13 am

Well, then why are you following archeology? Could you please try to glue two sentences together without stumbling on a self-contradiction?
Come on, stop trying to climb on mirrors with bogus arguments and get yourself together. I suspect no one feels threatened by what you claim to be -quote- “truth”, even if you showed it to really be the truth (which is clearly not the case, since you are only practicing verbal gymnastics to dodge the point you are not able to make).

And.. the reference to Comic Sans was surely -well, I was speaking to those with a modicum of humour, so I guess I will have to explain it to you- not the last resort of someone out of facts, but a reference to the most ridiculed font on the Interwebz; one could well say that, in this case, the form suits the contents.

    • July 11, 2012 8:49 pm

Probably one of the funnies things about your inane ramblings is that you are such a dilettante you don’t even realize how ironic and funny it is that you put your self-published ramblings into Comic Sans… you are a parody of a joke, and too stupid to even realize it!

“God” gave me my PhD! Hilarious stuff! (I guess God is a real shitty teacher as I read some of your book and it looks like it was written by someone with about a 95 IQ!).

  14. July 11, 2012 6:44 pm

This will be my last post on this topic, unless something important is raised and needs to be addressed. Thanks for getting my books some publicity, i am not good at advertising my own work (unlike Dr. James Tabor who seems quite good at it). Also, the focus of my work is not me but what Jesus wants you to hear and Him which provides one reason why I do not boast of my personal achievements.

That is what a believer is supposed to do.

    • July 12, 2012 8:39 am

By now you are gone, but you realise that publicity is not exactly what you are getting here, do you? It’s like advertising the effectiveness of Oscillococcinum on James Randi’s website, with the same outcome.

Go get a real real degree. That is what believers and non-believers are supposed to do in order to contribute usefully to a discussion. Begging the question and non sequiturs are making unlicensed teacher Jesus cry.

  15. July 14, 2012 5:03 pm

Please explain to me how indicating where you got your degrees takes glory from God.

His name is David Thiessen, author of wonderful editorials such as this:

    http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/opinon/2009/09/137_52626.html

That have earned him the ire of just about every non-Korean living in Korea.

He’s been banned from just about every expat message board there is short of the one that just ignores him. He’s made his own forum where he talks to himself over and over and over for pages at a time using different socks. He obviously has some serious issues and should probably seek help.

For more information consult this ongoing thread at one of the more popular expat boards.
